THE DOG DAYS OF SUMMER!

by | Jul 30, 2024 | Dad's Travels | 0 comments

Here we are. The early days of July already hot!

Sturgis is just around the corner, just counting the days until departure! Until then, lets focus on some local activities.

A few weeks back Jim from Canyon Lake area called up. Come on over lets ride my neck of the woods! Well ok, he has been meeting me up around Mason for previous rides, only fair, change of scenery always good!

Meet at gas stop right up the street from his house. Head to a local eatery in Startzville. Chicken fried steak was the special that Thursday. Not bad, priced around ten bucks. Filled an empty spot.

Ride back to River Road, Scenic stretch back to Sattler. Make a quick stop on the river for a cold one. Got to stay hydrated you know! On to the VFW in Sattler. Cheap beer and good people, a good combo!

After a time of cool down time to roll. Run back east to Purgatory Road, over to the Devils Backbone. Very old Texas Honky Tonk! Pretty much locals on a Thursday afternoon. After a few, time to ride west. Bryans place is on the way. Stop for a cool one and get in the shade for a little while. After a bit of time to roll home, Jim runs south I run west about 70 miles. A good day was had!

I’ve been planning a trip for years to Marys Cafe in Strawn, Texas, The time has come.

Talked with Bryan, Easy G, And Roadrunner, all tied up. Easy G would go but a late start.

Pulled out shortly after 8 am. a solo run. Actually pretty cool round 75. Hwy 290 to Fredericksburg then north on hwy 16. Llano , San Saba, De leon. Its hay season, Big round bales everywhere, Maybe hay will be a little cheaper this year. First time up this road thru Desdemona. Kinda rolling hills and wide open spaces!

Make it to Strawn around 11:30, Parking spot right up front under the big sign, Marys Cafe, Parking in the back, motorcycle parking across the street.

Walk in, sit anywhere you like! The girl at the front register says. I make my way to the back room. Mary greets me on the way through. I pick a table against the back wall.

Mary arrives with a menu, what you drinking, she asks, sweet tea will work. Well no sweet tea, only unsweet. Ok no, problem. Tell Mary I write for this publication, Texas Rider and Music News Magazine. Tell her to put her best foot forward! You are under the microscope!

I ordered the small chicken fried steak, with fresh cut fries and pinto beans. The steak is cooked on a flat grill. Kinda unusual. It arrived within 10 minutes, good and hot. Service was good, kept your tea glass full. Finished the steak, fries and beans could not finish, just too much in this hot weather.

Dad, Snuffy, Roadrunner, Fletch, Johnny Hill, Bud

Mary, brought a small apple pie and ice cream for dessert. Food was good and service was real good. The gravy was probably the best ever! I said Mary thank you! I think you passed the exam!

Thanked Mary for her hospitality and paid the bill. I’ll be back!

Walked out front to take a couple more pics. A guy got in his pickup and backed out to pull away. He stopped got back out, said can I take a pic of you and your bike with the back drop of the Mary’s Cafe sign. He used my phone to get the pic. That was a nice gesture! He said safe travels and pulled away.

I left the cafe around 1 pm., getting very warm, heat index around 110. Stop at Desdemona on the way back. Gas up, only regular! O well better then no gas!

I attended the annual parade in Comfort yesterday. A great display of American patriotism! The streets were lined with cheering people, lots of children. Good to see parents passing down the heritage of America.

The Cocky Rooster Bar won the best in show float. Congrates!! Went to the Rooster after the parade to celebrate this great country! Met with Mark and Brian to toast this great day!

Time to make some tracks, off to Hillbillyz, 20 miles east, the heat is extreme, bumping 100 with index probably around 110. Got to stay hydrated! Gatorade and water.

4th of July, got to have a hot dog, Well Hillbillyz special of the day. Chili cheese dog, very good.

Goes down good with a cold Shiner Bock! Good friends and cold beer what’s better?

Roll back to Comanche Stop at an antique mall to cool down, its Thursday, closed. Back on the road to Goldthewaite. Stop at the Texas Stop Sign, Dairy Queen! Water and a malt helps cool me down. 30 minutes in the shade helped a lot. Its off again down Hwy 16. Pull over in Cherokee. More water and 30 minutes in the shade.

Hwy 16 toFredericksburg, to the Pecan Grove Store. Cold water and a/c and cold beer made everything better. After about an hour time for the final stretch home.

Home sweet Home maybe next time do his trip in cooler weather. Maybe October or November would be better!

HAPPY 4TH OF JULY, Just finished the celebration of Americas independence yesterday! GOD bless this country as we go forward!

I usually make the music on the river in Kerrville. Well its just to hot for this trooper! Since Robert Earl quit performing at this event not quite the same! Been making this event for 10 or 12 years, hard to break old habits.

I am in the planning stages of the annual trip to Sturgis. The 84th annual Sturgis is about a month away. Be here before you know it! Should be an exciting trip, to South Dakota and beyond. Wyoming and Montana on the list. More on this trip in the next article.

I will continue to make this an exciting year for my 50 year road trip. Make every day count!

Like I always say “ Live every day to the hilt never know when it’s your last trip”
